Love yourself now. Watching Sle’s expression when she saw her reflection in a mirror was priceless. Every woman deserves to look and feel special, and having a part to play in making Sle look and feel special just brought joy to my heart.

Now is the time to love yourself. Not tomorrow, and certainly not after you’ve taken 50 billion Zumba classes, or dropped however many pounds you resolved to drop on new years eve.

Thank you Sle for letting me photograph you. I hope that the whole photoshoot experience made you feel confident as well as beautiful.

Stairs

Lately I have been taking pictures using my phone. The cool thing about having a phone with a camera, is that you don’t have to worry about settings, lenses, and such. All you pretty much need to do is pay attention to light, frame the shot, and click!

Taking pictures daily using a phone with a camera has helped me develop a photographic eye which will in turn help improve my eye whenever I do “real” photoshoots.

So heres the deal with these images. I edited most of the images using PS Express as well as instagram. I try to shoot and post my images on my twitter feed so if you are a sucker for pain, follow me and I assure you I will bombard you with lots and lots of images. Oh, and I almost forgot, it might sound easy for me to say but you don’t have to have an iphone to take good pictures or just pictures for that matter. Grab a camera, any camera and go outside and make pictures, ok?

Travel: Rural Tennessee + North Carolina

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

Though Texas is my home state I consider Tennessee to be my second home. I lived there for about 2 years and every time I drive or fly into The Volunteer State, my heart and soul skips a beat and then feels right at home. Tennessee is such an amazingly beautiful state especially during Summer and Autumn.  The rolling mountains aka Appalachian mountains remind me so much of the small hill town I grew up in called Ngong.

Here are some of the images I made while I was in East Tennessee (my ocha) and North Carolina. Ok, let me just shut up and show you the images. Enjoy!

American flag + signs

Small Town Post office. Man, this town has got to be small!

Couple rowing together in the afternoon.

A hearty meal my lover and I cooked. I forgot to photograph the Ugali that she allowed me to make.

I asked for an espresso. They handed me this small tiny cup and I was like “What!!!! Its so small! I want my money back.” Now I know not to ever order espresso. What a rip off.

Down Town Asheville, North Carolina. This place is the Austin, Texas of North Carolina. All the artists, all the weirdos, all my buddies hang out here. I loved this place.

So there you have it! Thanks for reading this entry.

Michelle and I go waaaaaaaaay back. Not too way back but kinda way back. It was awesome that I got to meet with her to make these images. I really loved catching up and collaborating with her to make these images. A photo shoot is as good or as bad as the shooter and subject make it. This right here was an awesome shoot.

Michelle, the sky is the limit. Do your thing girrrrrl, follow your dreams and remember that it’s ok to be the originally cool person that you are. Thanks for letting me shoot you!

Portrait: Ray

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

He is the kind of guy who walks into a room and lights it up just by his very presence. He can be funny, thoughtful, and wise all at the same time. His laugh is infectious. He loves using his ancient Android phone and is a fan of the Mad Men TV show. His name is Ray, Ray Mah Kahsi.

I got to hang out with Ray a while ago and it didn’t take us long to laugh and reminisce about the tough and great times we went through as students in Nairobi School (a somewhat prestigious high school in Kenya). Back then, if someone told us that we would end up 10+ years later chatting in some apartment in America i’d slap them silly and then turn around and slap myself double silly for even tolerating the thought.

Ray is now like a brother to me and just like a brother he had absolutely no choice but to let me photograph him. Ray, thanks for letting me beat you these photos. I hope these images captured your lively spirit and personality. Enjoy!

My Guilty Pleasure: ANTM

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

If you walked up to me and asked, “Rags, what kind of movies do you like?” Without skipping a beat I would say to you that I love independent films (my faves are Reservoir Dogs, Chasing Amy and Bamboozled) but most of all I love watching documentaries  (some of my faves are Anvil! The Story of Anvil, Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father and American Movie).

What I won’t add is that I LOVE reality TV shows. They are so addictive aren’t they? Top on my list is America’s Next Top Model. Yes, I said it. I am a HUGE ANTM fan. I even know the intro of the show by heart! Plus I can’t wait to watch this coming cycle.

Now before you go ahead and judge me I’d like to say that I only watch the show to scope out the kind of light setups, and equipment the photographers have during their photoshoot coz I’m a geek like that. Ok, I kinda lied. Truth be told, I love ANTM cos there’s nothing better than a good drama. Ummmm, I think I’m in the TMI zone so I will now back out of it slowly but surely and ask; so, what do you think about the weather?

The Day I Photographed A Model

Friday, May 7th, 2010

I was having trouble getting friends to photograph so it dawned on me to join an online site where photographers and models connect with the goal of helping each other build a portfolio. It is on this site that I met Christi. We decided to meet at an apartment complex for this shoot.

Shooting at an apartment complex was a tad bit challenging coz I really did not want my shots to look like they were taken by an apartment complex pool. Thanks to the kind of lens I used, I managed to blur the background.

Here are some faves from the shoot. Enjoy!

The Ever Evasive Sunset

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

I am yet to capture a perfect sunset. I attempted to capture this sunset despite it having pretty much vanished. The model who is going to be a regular on this blog was kind enough to pose for me on a really cold day.
